What Can I Assume if a Candidate Sends Me Two Different Resumes for the Same Position?

It's OK to customize cover letters and resumes; everyone does it.   But when someone sends two resumes that do not coincide then you might assume the candidate is careless as well as untruthful , which might be OK unless you are a race car driver or a heart surgeon.   Not much margin of error there...ha...

If the resumes are factually consistent then take them at their face value and understand that each is a variation on the theme of what the employer wants to hear from a competitive candidate...and not hear.    Taken as such, two such perspectives may give the recruiter more insight.  But alas mistakes do happen and you wouldn't want to disqualify a competitive candidate just for making a mistake.

On the other hand don't forget that mistakes can be indicators of character or perceptual flaws that indicate an applicant does not match the image they are trying to project.

As always, follow up on competitive candidates with a phone interview before a face-to-face interview.
